The Death of the UK Two Party System

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I think we can finally announce the death of the 2/3 party system that has held this country for so long.

With the rise of the Lib-Dems, we finally broke the 2 party swing. However, due to their political assassination by the conservatives in the coalition deal, their victory was short-lived. That has given space to the disgruntled voter finally having a say that’s making a difference.

UKIP has gained quite a few seats from marginal conservatives, and the Green Party, while not gaining as many seats as would have been expected are being reported in the same way that the Lib-Dems were nearly 6 years ago.

As I was watching the results page, I noticed that the Greens/UKIP normally covered in “Others”, actually have a slot to themselves.

Of course, while we still have the first-past-the-post system, which is broken and non-representative, the UKIP gains are going to be more drastic than they would have been otherwise. As Mr Farage said: “There are areas of the country where now we have got an imprint in local government. Under the first-past-the-post system we are serious players.”

So, while this election is not a good result for common decency, it is a result for breaking the old establishment of the 2 party system.

What I personally lament is how different the local council elections would have looked with PR.

Now, let us not stop momentum. The General Election is next year. Watch the party you voted for, learn about them, decide if it’s who you want running the country.
