The Demons in the Darkness – Easter Eve Sermon.

An Easter Eve Sermon.

This was an interesting sermon, both in the way it was written, and the way it was recieved.

Some comments:
The beginning terrified me…

I felt guilty all the way through..

I’m not sure how I feel about those comments.

Interesting sermon, with some good images. I do wonder at the language at times and is it a little church-y, but it is also a constant set of powerful images.

The Language is, indeed, a little Churchy. It was aimed at the congregation that was there. One of the benefits of village life is that you (sort of) know who’s likely to show up for what services. This was one of those servies that, based on previous attendence, and based on attendence at other services in Easter Week, I wasn’t expecting any non-church (or new-Church, or fringe-Church) at. I know it’s a risk, but as I said in the previous post, I didn’t write this sermon, it came rather, through me.

For us, it is the Easter-day services where a little lighter sermon is called for. Infact, I’m hoping that next year we move to a family-orinetated service all together for Easter Day. It seems that patterns are changing fairly quickly in our small-ish villages, where attendence has moved from night to morning as the age of children flips from 9-10 back to 0-4. Now all we have to do is to try to build on those holiday christians with something positive that makes the Church a non-scary, non-threatening, welcoming place so that they consider returning later in life. If we can make Church part of “what they do” on Christmas and Easter, then at least we’re handing on the torch for the next person.
