The Synod of the Church of England has voted against allowing women Bishops. Interestingly, however, it’s not the Clergy, or the Bishops that are against this move.
It’s the Laity. That is, the people in the pews. They were the house that voted against it. The “yes” got 64% of the votes. There was only 6 votes in it.
A very close vote, but it puts the entire thing back for another 5 years, because of the way that legislation like this will need to take shape.
The interesting thing about it being the laity is that it means that, despite the efforts of the hierarchy, it is the people who have chosen to keep the Church where it is.
Perhaps when people say that the Church should change, and that the Clergy aren’t doing enough, people should remember this choice.
